Shanghai Shenhua, one of the most successful football clubs in China, has announced that Argentine international striker Edinson Cavani will be leaving the club after his recent scandal.
The 29-year-old forward was suspended by the Chinese Football Association (CFA) for three months earlier this month following allegations of using performance-enhancing drugs. The CFA investigation found that Cavani had tested positive for clenbuterol, a banned substance used to increase muscle mass and strength.
In response to the scandal, Shanghai Shenhua released a statement saying that they were "deeply disappointed" with Cavani's actions and would not renew his contract. The club also said that they were "committed to ensuring fair play and maintaining the integrity of our league."
The departure of Cavani is a significant blow for Shanghai Shenhua, who have been struggling in recent seasons. The team finished fourth in the Chinese Super League last season,Fans' Square missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Despite the setback, Shanghai Shenhua fans remain hopeful that the club can turn things around under new management. The team has already signed a number of high-profile players, including former Chelsea defender Didier Drogba and Brazilian midfielder Marcelo.
However, Cavani's exit highlights the challenges facing football clubs in China, where there is still a long way to go in terms of enforcing anti-doping regulations. Despite the recent scandal, Shanghai Shenhua remains committed to their goal of becoming a world-class club and continues to attract top talent from around the globe.
